Description
The decision has been made to help secure the Gannon University systems by removing all users from the Local Administrators Group on Gannon Owned Computers. This decision will not affect 90 percent of our users, this is due to not needing it under normal day-to-day operations. For those who do need the permissions from time to time we have a solution, Make Me Admin.
Resolution/Troubleshooting
Before you install/update any software packages or any task that requires administrative rights (Tasks EX: installing/updating hardware drivers, using the Run As Administrator command, etc..) to your computer, you will need to do the following:
- Double left-click on Make Me Admin on your desktop
or from the list of available programs in the start menu.
- Select "Grant me Administrator Rights".
- This will elevate your privileges to install software. The window will minimize, and you will get the Windows Notification below, also a Lock on the Task bar.
Note: It might take up to a minute for the "Grant me Administrator Rights" options to become available to select while it checks for your current admin level access (everything will be grayed out except the 'exit' option during this time).
Once rights are granted you will see the below window pop up from the Notifications area on the Taskbar
Now that you have administrative rights on your computer you can install / update the software you need.
- When you go to install you will get a UAC prompt, shown below:
- Enter in your Gannon username and password and click Yes to continue installing your software.
- Once installation is finished, double left click the Make Me Admin software and select "Remove My Administrator Rights"
- Close Make Me Admin
Note: MMA is set up to automatically remove your administrative rights after a period of time if not done manually.
