Description

The VPN (Virtual Private Networking) Client also known as SonicWALL NetExtender or SonicWALL Mobile Connect provides a secure connection to the Gannon network from anywhere on the Internet. Through this connection, Off-Campus users with high-speed Internet connections can gain access to network resources as if they were connected directly to the network (Dial-up users can use this also, but it is EXTREMELY slow).

The SonicWALL VPN Client is automatically available to all active faculty/staff, and currently registered students.

  • VPN Access is not available for retired employees or non-registered students.

International Access - Virtual Desktop - VPN access is blocked in most countries outside the US. If you are trying to gain access from a blocked country, you can leverage Gannon's virtual desktop to access on-campus resources like mapped drives and Colleague. No installation is needed. Settings:
Server:  vpn.gannon.edu   
Username:  (Your Gannon Network ID)
Password:  (Your Gannon Network password)
Domain:  gannon.edu

The NetExtender VPN client supports the following Operating systems:

  • Windows 10
  • Windows 11

The Mobile Connect client supports the following Operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.15 or better
  • Apple mobile devices
  • Android mobile devices

You will need the VPN software in order to access the following:

  • Colleague web UI
  • Network drives
  • SPSS license server
  • Select Survey
  • Informer
  • ImageNow
  • Managed Printing
  • Marketing Store (https://marketingstore.gannon.edu/)

More Information

  • There is a 4-hour inactivity timeout. 
  • Please be aware that due to the many possible configurations of hardware and software ITS is only able to provide minimal support for this software. For support, contact the ITS Help Desk at x7501.
  • ITS is not responsible for any damage to your hardware or software.

Resolution/Troubleshooting

Download & installing the VPN:

Requirements:

  • You must be off campus to install and use the VPN client.
  • An internet connection is required to use the VPN client.
  • You must shutdown any Personal Firewall Software you may have running as it will interfere with the VPN.

Windows 10 or 11:

You must be off-campus and connected to the internet before you can download the VPN client (SonicWALL NetExtender).

  • Open a web browser and navigate https://vpn.gannon.edu.
    • Sign in with your Gannon Network ID and password.
      • Enter the temporary password sent to your Gannon email.​​​​​​​
        • Follow the instructions on the webpage before proceeding with the installation. 

MAC, iPhone, and Android devices:

  • Please visit your mobile app store to get the free SonicWALL Mobile Connect client.

Connecting to the VPN once installed:

  • Once installed, open the SonicWall NetExtender app and sign in with your Gannon Network ID and password.

  • Then an Authentication prompt should appear and a temporary password will be sent to your Gannon email address.

  • Check your Gannon email for an email from "sonicwall@gannon.edu" and enter the temporary password into the box.
    • Email for the temporary password to be entered will come in like the example shown below:
