How to Connect Amazon Echo Dot

Connect Amazon Echo Dot to the Gannon GUWireless network.

More Information

  • GUGuest cannot be used to register an entertainment device. If the computer or phone being used to register the entertainment device has connected to GUGuest Wi-Fi within the past 24 hours, you will need to wait the time or contact the Help Desk further assistance to see if it can be removed earlier.
    • ​​​​​​​*The computer used to access the registration URL needs to be successfully authenticated to GUWireless to access the registration page.

Resolution/Troubleshooting

Reconnecting an Amazon Echo Dot:

  1. Plug the device in with the power cord  
  2. Open the Alexa app on phone 
  3. If it does not prompt to start the set-up process, go to "add device"
    • Select what version you have from the list to initiate setup
  4. You should see an orange light on the device  
    • If you do not see the light, press and hold the action button
      • ​​​​​​​Once the light turns orange, hit continue in the Alexa app
  5. You should be prompted on the Alexa app to go into the network settings on the phone  
  6. In the network settings on the phone, select your device name from the list 
  7. Once selected, go back to the Alexa app
    • A prompt for what network you wish to connect to should then appear 
  8. Select GUWireless from the list, it will ask for the password- type: wireless@gannonuniversity
  9. Open a browser on your computer* and go to http://registerdevice.gannon.edu 
  10. Now your device should be connected.

Connecting new Amazon Echo Dots that have never connected on campus:

  • Follow steps above up to step 8, it will error with the password.
  • Open a browser on your computer* and go to http://registerdevice.gannon.edu
    • Enter your network ID, password, device type (other) and MAC address and click Submit. 
      • You should get the error: “The MAC address you entered is invalid for an entertainment device” – take a photo of the Wireless MAC address with your phone​​​​​​​ and the error message and attach it to your ticket instructions below
        • Once we have the photos and the location, including building and room number, in the ticket we will send it off to have the Mac address adjusted.
          • We will be in touch when it is done to try to register the device again.
      • After Mac address is adjusted follow steps above again and you should get the count down stating it was connected successfully.
        • It will now take the GUWireless password to finish the set up.

How to find your Mac address:

  1. If the device has not been registered yet, then it will not be listed and you will need to connect on another network to get it to come up in the Amazon Alexa app or locate the Mac address on the box it came in.
  2. If the device has been connected before, go to your Amazon Alexa app and go to the device you are trying to connect and go to about to find the Mac address. 

Attaching the screenshots/photos to your ticket:

  • Go to my.gannon.edu ​​​​​​​and click the "ITS Help desk" button at the top right

  • On the home tab locate the "Quick Button" Box and select "My Tickets"

  • Click on the ticket you want to attach the photo(s) to > At the right side, you will see a box that says "Attachments"
    • You can click on the + option or drag and drop to attach the pictures, shown below:


If error message that it is not a valid MAC address: 

  • GUGuest cannot be used to register an entertainment device. If the computer or phone being used to register the entertainment device has connected to GUGuest Wi-Fi within 24 hours, the Help Desk will need to be contacted for further assistance.

  • Verify that the device is connected to GUWireless when entering the MAC address in the registration website (this step is often missed in the process) 

  • If device is a wireless TV or game device, verify which error it is: 
    • If you register the device and get an error stating, “The MAC address you entered is invalid for a Mac address” – Please re-type your Wireless MAC address.

    •  If you register the device and get an error stating, “The MAC address you entered is invalid for an entertainment device” – take a photo of the Wireless MAC address with your phone and attach it to your ticket for quicker response times or email it to helpdesk@gannon.edu (remember to provide details such as your name, device type, error message and a phone number in case we have further questions)
