External Drive - Troubleshooting

Description

When trying to use an external drive plugged into a computer, the drive is not appearing or being detected.


Resolution/Troubleshooting

  • Check that all connections to the device are secure.
  • See if the power light is displaying on the external USB hard drive.
  • Has an external USB hard drive worked in the past? If so, has any new software or hardware been installed recently?
    • Uninstalling the new software or hardware could help.
  • Try a different USB port on the computer and try the external drive on another device.
  • Reboot the computer and try again.

Was the USB drive purchased by the ITS Department? If so create a ticket with the make and model of the external hard drive. If this is a personal external drive and nothing above helped, there is limited support ITS can provide and you may have to contact an outside service such as PCcare.
