GUWireless and GUGuest: Connecting on Campus

Description

A rescan of your computer is required twice a semester for personal computers to verify that your system software is up-to-date and that you have a working antivirus software with up-to-date virus definitions.  These rescan dates are communicated to the Gannon community by portal announcements.

GUWireless is the only wireless network available in the reshalls. (Harborview is a reshall)
GUWireless and GUGuest are available in all academic buildings.

A password is required to make the connection:

  • GUWireless - wireless@gannonuniversity
  • GUGuest - Please contact the Help Desk at 814-871-7501 for the password

GUWireless/GUGuest requirements for computers:

  • Supported Operating System (OS): Windows 10/11 or Mac OS 12+
  • Up-to-date operating system and service packs
  • An approved anti-virus software installed
    • Up-to-date anti-virus definitions

More Information

  • Can I connect to the GU Wireless with a non-standard network ID (ie, HRConsult, alumni99, etc) rather than using GUGuest?
    • Yes you can.  FortiNAC (Network Access Control) can identify a non-standard account that is connecting to the GU Wireless network. FortiNAC will scan for any anti-virus software with up-to-date definitions.
  • GUGuest connection is good for 24 hours.
    • A Gannon Network ID will NOT authenticate to GUGuest.
    • CAUTION: Do not connect to GUGuest if you are a student, faculty, or staff.
      • No Gannon pages will be available.
      • No game devices can connect through GUGuest.
  • Connecting wireless printers for Students, Faculty, or Staff living in the Residence Halls: Contact the Help Desk at 814-871-7501.

Resolution/Troubleshooting

Connecting to the campus Wi-fi requires FortiNAC (Network Access Control) device registration and scan to be ran to make sure network requirements are met before devices are granted full Internet access on both GUWireless and GUGuest.

FortiNAC Tip: Don’t use your Network ID to login to FortiNAC on another user’s device.  What happens is that once registered that device will now be registered to you and not the correct person.  We only allow 10 registered devices per network ID.

Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to GUWireless:

  1. Connect to 'GUWireless' in the network settings
    • Password:  wireless@gannonuniversity
    • Open a browser and navigate  to 'connect.gannon.edu'
      •  Agree to the Acceptable Usage Policy
      • Log in with your Gannon network ID and password
      • Run the FortiNAC Dissolvable agent and follow on-screen directions.
        • If requirements are met, you will see a Success window and a status bar for establishing your connection.

NOTE: If the FortiNAC scan fails, you will have Internet access to download windows updates or anti-virus updates over the wifi.  Access to other websites will not occur until you have successfully passed the FortiNAC scan.

Connect your computer, phone, or tablet to GUGuest:

  1. Connect to 'GUGuest' in the network settings
    • Please contact the Help Desk at 814-871-7501 for the password
  2. Open a browser and navigate to 'connect.gannon.edu'
    •  Agree to the Acceptable Usage Policy.
      • Click on the Gannon University Guests Start button and complete the guest registration.

Installing Anti-Virus (Personal Computers):

All computers that directly connect to the Gannon network are required to have approved up-to-date anti-virus software.  If you're connecting remotely via VPN, anti-virus software is recommended.

The following is a list of free Gannon approved anti-virus software. These companies offer paid versions of their anti-virus software so make sure that you click on the appropriate link once you get to the company web page.

  • AVG Anti-virus for Windows, Mac, Android & iOS
    • Available for download at avg.com
  • Windows Defender for Windows 10 or 11 computers
    • Instructions are available here

NoteWhen anti-virus software vendors update their product there is sometimes a delay before our FortiNAC (Network Access Control) recognizes that version. Click here to visit our KB: Connecting to Campus Wi-Fi: General Questions & Troubleshooting and select 'Anti Virus Software Not Recognized' from the table of content for more information.

Cause

Having our GUWireless or GUGuest without a password allows anything to connect. So even for those non-Gannon devices that don't pass FortiNAC but are connected, it creates a security risk and reduces the number of connections on wireless access points.

Although we will be promoting the password and working to make sure the Gannon community is aware of it (which may sound counter intuitive), it will reduce the amount of casual traffic enough to provide a security and performance benefit.
