Wired Network Connection Unstable in Academic Buildings

Description

If you have a wired network connection that seems to be going up and down sporadically it may be because the wiring is Cat5 and can’t handle the auto speed/duplex setting the network card is set to.  This applies to academic buildings only.

Resolution/Troubleshooting

  • If you replace an existing computer or add a new computer and the jack is labeled as Category 5 (see attached picture) please open a ticket with the following:
    • Building
    • Office
    • Jack number
    • Computer name
    • MAC Address (if known)
  • ITS can then verify what the Network Port is set to so that the Network Card and Network Port matches.

Cause

If there is a mismatch then the port can start to become unstable.
