Description
If you feel your computer is infected with spyware or malware, we recommend running a free software called Malwarebytes.
Resolution
Installing and running scan:
- Download the free trial from Malwarebytes.com.
- Click "Update", to ensure that you have the latest AV definition files.
- From the main screen, click on "Scanner".
- Select: "Advanced scanner", then select: "Configure Scan".
- On the "Custom Scan Configuration" window all four scanning options should be selected:
- Scan Memory Objects
- Scan Startup and Registry Settings
- Scan Archives
- Scan for Rootkits
- Select only the C: drive to scan.
- Select: "Scan".
Once the scan has completed, if there are no malicious items detected, simply close out of the program. If malware is found, Total Threats Detected screen will list the number of potential threats which will be selected to be removed. If they're not selected, select the checkbox next to "Threat". This will also be accompanied by a pop-up message in the lower right corner of the screen notifying you that the scan completed and if any malware was found.
Possible threats found:
- Quarantine and then delete any unwanted programs.
- After several seconds a pop-up message will appear verifying that all items have been removed successfully and prompting you to restart the computer to complete the removal process. Select: "Yes" to restart the computer.
- Run a second scan if any malicious items are found. The computer must be rebooted between scans.
*It is recommended to uninstall Malwarebytes from the computer after use.
